A visual artist-painter from Toulouse just paid tribute to Sempeby renaming one of the streets of the Pink City with the name of one of the heroes imagined by the cartoonist who died on August 11th.
A little Nicolas in tears
Joël Martial, who hides under the artist name The poster in the street and the Instagram account of the same name is at the origin of this unusual tribute located Grand-rue Saint-Nicolas, renamed Grand-rue Petit Nicolas for the occasion.
Above the panel, a little Nicolas in tears on a rock faces Super bather, the emblematic character of the Poster in the street.
“Usually with Super bather, I highlight the small architectural absurdities of Toulouse, such as a badly placed cable or a badly installed frame, explains the artist. Wanting to pay homage to Sempé, I proceeded a little differently, looking for a rue Nicolas in the Pink City to be able to set up my project. »
Saint-Cyprien district
After drawing a little Nicolas inspired by that of Sempé, Joël Martial went Grand rue Saint-Nicolas to install his work this Sunday morning.
“Sometimes I get inspired by what Sempé was doing, underlines the artist. What he did very well was to highlight a character in an immensity, like a man in love on a bench, drowned in a very big city for example. Point out small architectural absurdities in a big city like Toulouse, it’s kind of the same thing. »
A nice work
Ephemeral work, the little Nicholas of the Poster in the street may not stay long in the Grand-rue Saint-Nicolas. Whatever, Joël Martial managed to put a little poetry in Toulouse with a tribute that Sempé would undoubtedly have found very “nice”, according to the favorite word of a little boy that he invented with Rene Goscinny.
