The “Golden Collection. Coins of André van Bastelaer” exhibition at the Royal Castle
583 numismatic items from the André van Bastel collection were presented at the “Gold Collection. Coins of André van Bastelaer ”, the opening of which took place on Monday at the Royal Castle in Warsaw. Money incl. The Roman and Byzantine empires, Brabant and Belgian, will be on display until November 27.
“We show that in the Royal Castle we have things that are difficult to show in Warsaw, ungrateful when visiting, unknown class of knowledge in itself. Classes in this case one of the best collections of numismatic gold coins in the world” – said the director at the opening Wojciech Fałkowski’s Royal Castle.
He recalled that the collection of coins found its way to the Castle during its reconstruction. “In the 1970s, Professor Stanisław was approached by the scientist, notary, collectors, history, history André vantelaer, who had his base as a gift from the foundation of the newly emerging Castle. The collection, which is the foundation, raises the numismatic scope he has, simply as the fruit of his work, fruitful action, also the search for an exchange with other collectors – Fałkowski.
However, he believed that their gifts were rare, but the Castle is lucky to have such random and generous references.
He pointed out that “the exhibition is a tribute to the person who believed that this is an important place, you will introduce a symbol to take in then, whoever there is, that you still want to join this then who wants to believe that this Castle so soon , beautifully and with such great mastery will be resurrected.
The first of the three main sections of the collection to be presented to the public for the first time is Roman and Byzantine coins. From Roman knowledge, a master, a hardware master, a master portrayed on subscriptions and solids, coins more valuable, that the author managed to collect a register, state and record. There are slightly fewer coins from Byzantium, but it is still in one of the finest of this language in Poland.
The largest part of the collection are Brabant and Belgian coins – and therefore native to the creators of the collection – André van Bastelaer. It is among them that the most numismatic items made of other metals – silver and copper.
As assessed by the organizers of the exhibition, “coins are the most captivating ones. Brackie, Flemish noble, golden moutons (+ bar +), riders (+ rider +), leeuwa (+ lion +) – so the coins are marked with signs – grinding But also herrings, already minted in Belgium after 1830, pay attention to the remarks – one of the approaching circles of Dr. van Bastelaer “- indicated.
The last section of the collection is world coins. His representation from other countries, also from a different country of origin, as well as from the USA or the United States of America.
André van Bastelaer was born on August 17, 1907 in He studied medicine at the Catholic University of Louvain, where in 1933 he obtained his doctoral degree. His interest in science and art was influenced by family technology. He took over the fascination with numismatics from his father – René van Bastelaer, from whom he received the first money, which became the seed to collect the collection. He died on May 31, 1990. The opening of the exhibition featured performances from the Gang Tango band.
The exhibition was prepared in connection with the XVI International Numismatic Congress (XVI International Numismatic Congress), which will be held in Warsaw on September 11-16, 2022.
