“Play as many matches as possible”
After playing two seasons in Bourg en Bresse, the half of mêlée returned to Normandy where he had played from 2018 to 2020, for personal and sporting reasons. Ambitious and humble, Florent Campeggia will try to bring his qualities to maintain an additional Rouen Rugby season.
Why return to Rouen?
To begin with, my girlfriend is from Rouen. I met her during my first visit to Rouen Rugby. I also kept in touch with friends who still play here. The project with a new staff and the opportunity to stay in Pro D2 in a pleasant club motivated me to come back to Normandy.
Regarding the staff, the infrastructure, the atmosphere, is it different from your first visit?
As a priority, the staff has completely changed, except for the scrum coach (Grégory Bouly, Editor’s note), so I am discovering new coaches. The pitch at the Robert Diochon stadium is of better quality, with a hybrid pitch that is therefore ideal for playing rugby. And compared to my first visit, the atmosphere is very young. I feel really good.
Florent Campeggia finds a family club
After your first two years in Rouen, have you kept an eye on the club’s results?
During my first year in Bourg en Bresse, we were in National, and I followed the matches of Rouen, in Pro D2. But the following season, we went up, so at that time, I could no longer support the Rouennais, but I watched their results.
Did you talk about the game system with Nicolas Godignon?
We started talking about it. I like his game project, quite open where it requires a lot of rigor, then the call to play is organised.
Aren’t you afraid of competition with Michael Baska or Joris Lezat?
From the moment you fear competition, you have to stop playing rugby. It allows us to grow and progress. Thanks to this, the level of play will increase, even if the staff is present to manage the rotations.
What are your expectations for this season?
I want to play as many matches as possible, being good on the pitch. For the collective, I hope to experience a less degraded season.
