Oskar Magnusson and Sweden win bronze in the World Juniors
Two Washington Capitals prospects competed in the World Junior Championship and one of them came away with the bronze medal. Oskar Magnusson and Sweden took down the Czech Republic 3-1 in the bronze medal game.
Magnusson went 13 shifts in the contest and logged 8:04 minutes of ice time and recorded one shot on goal. Sweden got goals from Fabian Lysell, Isak Rosen and Linus SJodin. The lone goal from the Czech Republic came from Michal Gut. It was the 20th time Sweden won a medal in the World Juniors, which is the third most in WJC history.
Magnusson had a goal and an assist in seven World Junior games. He is a fast player who is not afraid to block shots and is a spark plug whether Sweden places him in the top six or the bottom six. The other Caps prospect in attendance was Haakon Hanelt with Germany. He also had a goal and an assist through five games. Germany lost to Finland in the quarter-finals.
Magnusson was the Caps’ seventh-round pick 211th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft. He spent 2021-22 playing with AIK in the HockeyAllsvenskan, the second highest level of professional hockey in Sweden. He had five goals and six assists for 11 points in 41 games.
Magnusson also attended the 2022 Caps Development Camp and had a good game in the prospects scrimmage. He is unsigned for now and it is not clear where he will spend 2022-23. There probably won’t be a spot for him with the varsity team, but there might be a spot for him with the Hershey Bears in the AHL or the South Carolina Stingrays in the ECHL.
Magnusson has a two-way game. He can play good defense and block shots and be a stone wall on penalties. On the offensive attack, he can create scoring chances. He has the potential to be a late round steal for the Caps. We will find out in a few years.
