Canada’s Ridly Greig leaves the game against Switzerland after being hit
Canadian forward Ridly Greig left the World Junior Hockey Championship quarterfinal game against Switzerland and did not return after a goal by Swiss defender Vincent Despont in Edmonton on Wednesday night.
He raced around the puck near the end of the first half and the Ottawa Senators’ lookout seemed to take the hit off his shoulder. Looking shaken, he made a brief return to the bench before heading to the locker room.
Head coach Dave Cameron said Greig will be assessed after the 6-3 win and the team will provide another update on Thursday.
A strong two-way player capable of scoring hard-earned goals and landing heavy hitters, an injury to Greig would be a huge loss for Team Canada. His penalty-taking skills kept Canada in the game against Finland after a series of offenses in the third period that gave the Finns an extended two-man advantage. Greig also scored the winning goal in the victory over the Finns.
In four games in the preliminary round, Greig scored three goals and recorded six points, in addition to his power play and penalty shootout efforts for Team Canada. This is his first World Juniors appearance.
The Senators selected the Brandon Wheat Kings product in the first round (28th overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft.
