Climatic problems increasing: Slovakia is suffering from an extraordinary drought! Experts draw attention to the condition of water bodies
The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute warned that the continued absence of widespread and persistent persistent induced causes causes some drying up of streambeds, especially in the basin of the southern half of the country.
“Although the end of July brought the cyclonic nature of the weather with widespread precipitation, during the first half of August the hydrological situation worsened and began to deepen again,” stated SHMÚ. He concluded that in the last August days, precipitation occurred only locally and for a short time.
According to him, the flows in the basins increased mostly only temporarily, after a few days they dropped to the level of low water levels. In some water measuring stations, the institute is once again observing a drop in average daily flows to the level of long-term recorded minimums. According to SHMÚ, not only the lack of precipitation during the last months contributed to the current situation, but several unfavorable factors, among them the spring snow melt.

He explained that in the past, the spring melting of the snow cover was mainly a source for the creation of underground water reserves, which were able to cover to a certain extent the precipitation deficit of dry summer waters. “However, these conditions have changed in recent years,” the institute warned. He clarified that the previous winters were relatively warm and not very rich in snow. “The deficit of the snow cover was manifested by the lack of spring runoff from melting snow (April – May), or the melting of the snow cover occurred in earlier months,” added SHMÚ.
