Salzburg goalkeeper: continue Philipp Köhn or time for Nico Mantl? – Football
According to Christoph Freund, the goalkeeper is very well positioned. Maybe even better than in the past.
Nevertheless, the Salzburg goalkeeper situation developed into an issue that was probably not necessarily on the list with the series champion.
At least not after Philipp Köhn’s good last season, in which he was able to replace his challenger Nico Mantl early on and ultimately keep him at a distance.
At the moment, however, those responsible in Salzburg are forced to verbally wall the 24-year-old more often than she would like.
After a serious mistake in his win against Sturm Graz, Köhn made an unmotivated excursion in the 2-0 win in Hartberg with the score being 0-0, but the East Styrians were unable to take advantage of it.
Manuel Neuer also failed
“Last week it was obviously an own goal, but this time it was an outing where he thought maybe he could jump higher or the ball wouldn’t bounce that high. But nothing happened, he kept a clean sheet again,” also the Salzburg sports director.
Freund is tolerant of mistakes and points out that Bayern star Manuel Neuer also made a serious mistake in the opener against Eintracht Frankfurt.

“Even the world’s best goalkeeper, who is usually so good with his foot, got a goal like that. That happens to a goalkeeper once,” says Freund.
Last week, coach Matthias Jaissle hastened to give Köhn the confidence as number one.
Freund can’t do this in place of his sick trainer, of course, because this is a trainer’s decision. For this he firmly excludes that the “bulls” will be active in the goalkeeper sector on the transfer market.
koehn? You forget too quickly
“We have two very good goalkeepers,” the sporting director kept repeating, “we’re really happy to have two young, very ambitious goalkeepers.”
Freund continues: “It’s always easy to forget that Philipp played a really, really good season in which he conceded the fewest goals in our era. He’s a great support.
Köhn only had to get behind him 16 times in 29 league games in the past season.
The performance principle
It is actually logical to strengthen a strong backing in a shaky phase. In addition, the Swiss could not participate in the complete preparation after a meniscus operation, which could at least be one of the reasons for the less confident phase.
With the current Salzburg goalkeeper constellation, however, the topic of the performance principle always resonates.
With this reason, Jaissle took Mantl out of the gate a year ago after the league opener at Sturm Graz. The German had allowed himself one or two uncertainties.
Since then, the 22-year-old has been trying in vain to regain the job as number one.
Mantl’s “great development”
Freund praises the substitute: “Nico is developing very well, he did a very good job in the pre-season friendlies. The Liverpool game was of course a rewarding game when you get a lot on the hut. He played a really good game.
Whether Köhn is currently at least a tad better goalkeeper than Mantl?
According to Freund, this is a question for the coaching staff and especially the goalkeeper coach: “They see the goalkeepers every day and discuss it. The fact is, of course, that Nico is really stepping on the gas and performing well. But of course Philipp worked a lot on the last one. That’s out of the question.”
Interpreted too much?
There is also no question that Köhn has it in his own hands to end the issue by not allowing himself any more blackouts.
But even if the pendulum should swing in the direction of Mantl at some point in this competitive struggle, Freund can tend to sleep well:
“We are not unhappy with the situation, we are very satisfied, even if that may be interpreted differently.”
