the mayor of the 1st sector deplores malfunctions in the collection
Invited to BFM Marseille, Sophie Camard indicated that trash cans have been overflowing lately in certain areas of the city. A return to normal, however, would be underway.
It’s an image that has become almost usual in Marseille. Garbage cans overflowing in the streets of Marseille and waste accumulating and strewing the sidewalks.
In question, several close strikes of the garbage collectors or even more recently the refusal of the traders of the course of Estienne d’Orves to manage themselves-the collection of their waste.
But in recent weeks, bis repetita in Marseille. Several residents, particularly in the city center, have noticed piles of waste in the streets. If no strike is in progress, malfunctions in garbage collection, the skill has evolved in the Metropolis of Marseille, have indeed taken place.
Invited to BFM Marseille this Thursday, the mayor (Printemps marseillais) of the 1st sector of Marseille (1st and 7th arrondissements), returned to these collection problems. problems reported by the mayor in a press release dated this Wednesday where she puts forward “very many reports” of the inhabitants on the question.
After having received several information, in particular from the Metropolis, Sophie Camard detailed on BFM Marseille the reasons for these malfunctions, “that nobody works”, according to her.
Machinery breakdown, tourists
Breakdowns on machines dedicated to collection partly explain these difficulties, as well as the new organization of working time for garbage collectors, at the heart of discussions between unions and communities during previous strikes. According to the town hall of the 1st sector, its implementation would be laborious for the moment.
“The working time having been extended, it was necessary to redo the whole organization of the tours and it has been going on for several months, there are still social tensions”, explains Sophie Camard.
However, other reasons mentioned by the Metropolis do not pass for Sophie Camard. The massive presence of tourists has favored the number of litter has been highlighted, as has the poor management of waste by Marseille merchants.
“That, it is anticipated, it is planned. We now know that in the summer there are tourists, Marseille is no longer an empty city. The service should be adapted in the summer”, judges the elected Marseille.
Towards a return to normal
However, under the impetus of the services of the Métropole, the situation now seems to be improving. Sophie Camard affirms that a return to normal would be programmed“.
“Additional resources would have been released by the Metropolis for this return to normal”, she specifies.
Despite everything, Sophie Camard deplores the management of this sequence by the Métropole, particularly in terms of communication. She underlines the lack of information disseminated by the Metropolis throughout these last weeks. It calls for the establishment of “an information-service system” on this type of subject, which is particularly recurrent in Marseille.
“It’s not normal that we have to play Sherlock Holmes to find out every time what’s going on in the bins. They have to provide information-services on their website, on a Twitter account and explain to people what happened when they have machine breakdowns or real malfunctions”.
A contentious subject
The management of waste collection had already been the objective of previous tensions between the municipality and the Metropolis, in particular during the various strikes which marred the daily life of the people of Marseilles a few months ago. “It’s a very divisive subject,” admits Sophie Camard.
The mayor of Marseille Benoît Payan had expressed his wish to recover this competence to the detriment of the Metropolis led by Martine Vassal.
However, this will not be the case for the time being. The mayor of the 1st sector recalled it on the set of BFM Marseille this Thursday. With the new decentralization law, “waste collection will remain in the Metropolis”. The municipality hopes to recover road works as well as cleaning and cleanliness.
