in Toulouse and the surrounding area, town halls are mobilizing for the elderly
While Haute-Garonne is on orange alert for the heat wave and Thursday promises to be more than torrid, the town hall of Toulouse and many municipalities in the department are organizing to support the elderly. Devices exist all year round but they are reinforced in these times of high heat.
Toll-free numbers
In the pink city there is the number “Hello Seniors”, free, to be contacted and followed by the town hall. It’s the 0.800.042.444. In Blagnac, a town of 24,000 inhabitants; there is also a number (0.800.031.700). The town hall is also extending the openings of its Espace seniors, an air-conditioned place with sofas, books, games, and even a restaurant for lunch. It is accessible from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., instead of 5 p.m. normally, at 19, rue de la Croix-Blanche. And during these scorching days, “the agents intimating the 185 people registered in the communal register”, details Valérie Bugeja Fernandez, deputy mayor for social affairs in Blagnac.
“The family or the person must take the steps to register because it is legally framedadds Isabelle Pagnac, Director of Social Affairs. We are starting to be prowled in our device. All our services are mobilized. We make home visits with social workers to check that everything is fine.”
regular calls
Isabelle Treil is a receptionist, really feels like she brings something with these calls, “sincerely, because we will give the alert if there is a problem.” His colleague Jean-Marie Prie also says that the bond woven throughout the year with seniors pays off: “We rub shoulders with certain daily newspapers, they trust me, we like each other. But we are useful all year round because we create social ties, we answer their questions.” Moreover, he is on familiar terms with Rosina, 90, when he calls her on the phone to see if she is well and to remind her that she has to drink and that a vehicle can pick her up at her house, if needed, to bring him to the senior home. She reassures him on the phone: “I’m hot, but I have the fan and I drink, I mix some cold water and tap water. I know I can come to your house, I’m lucky!”
Many other municipalities are setting up identical systems with heat registers and home monitoring. Do not hesitate to inquire at the town hall.
