A bottle of ketchup in the gardens of the Casino but why?
This bottle is actually part of a most intriguing exhibit.
It’s a strange giant ketchup bottle that has just washed up in the gardens of the Casino. It clashes with its surroundings but what is this bottle doing here?
It’s quite simple, it is a work of art and more specifically sculpture Daddies Tomato Ketchup Inflatable by artist Paul McCarthy. This is part of a larger exhibition. It features numerous works by the artist for a retrospective of his art in the heart of the Principality.
If you don’t know who Paul McCarthy is, remember the Christmas tree set up on Place Vendôme in Paris in 2014. It was shaped like an anal plug and made headlines. As a result, the work had been removed a few days after its installation.
Here, the sculpture exhibited in Monaco is more consensual and seeks to question the overconsumption of our time.
An exhibition with a strong questioning power
The more debatable works are hidden in the contemporary art gallery Hauser & Wirth. A gallery specializing in contemporary creation, it is hosting the “Pirates Stew Pot” exhibition this summer. Paul McCarthy reveals all his art there with the aim of making people think.
Greed, rampant commercialization, social ostentation, sadism, the works explore different vices and aspects of society while criticizing them through sculptures. Often disturbing, very bloody and filled with genitals, the exhibition offers an allegory of society still visible until August 27.
