Portugal debuts in the Veterans World Cup with victories at the +35 level
Playing at home, Portugal debuted this Sunday in the Veterans World Team Championship with victories of the men’s and women’s teams of the +35 level, both at the Jamor Tennis Complex.
Early in the morning, Rui Machado (former number 59 of the classification ATP) represented Portugal for the first time in veteran countries and did so with an authoritative 6-2 6-0 victory against the Austrian Harold Schachinger.
Later, Fred Gil (former ATP number 62 and already more experienced in veterans, with two titles of national champion and above, four medals in the 2021 Veterans World Cup) confirmed the victory by applying the partials of 6-3 and 6-2 to Martin Zehetner.
The meeting between Portugal and ended with Fred Gil’s Austria and Gonçalo Nicau in pairs, 6-2 and 6-2 against Schachinger and Zehetner, which ensured the national team’s first place in Group A of the Italia Cup. Monday will be a day of rest and, on the following day, the home team will fight for qualification for the quarter-finals against Croatia.
Closing the day, and at the same level, the women’s team also came in with a victory in this Veterans’ Team World Championship.
In the Suzanne Lenglen Cup, Portugal beat Poland 2-1, with Rita Freitas to you Olesja Szpak by 6-0 and 6-0, in the opening match, and return to block beside Neuza Silva (formerly 133 WTA) to eliminate Szpak and Bárbara Maciocha by 6-3 and 6-2 in the final pair. By the middle, Frederica Piedade (formerly 142 WTA) lost 6-2 and 6-0 to Maciocha.
It has not yet obtained the Jamor Tennis Complex, as the men’s and women’s teams of +40 have not obtained the Complex, obtaining from Tennis: in the ladies Portugal-0 with Argentina. Isaura Faria was the first chosen to ascend to Court 1 and was defeated by Maria Victoria Dominates with the partials of 6-3 and 6-0; then the captain Inês Moura couldn’t care Silvina Delgadowho won by 6-1 and 6-2, and not as the same Portuguese protagonists joined forces and gave in to the same opponents of the singles with more balanced partials (6-2 and 7-5).
In the gentlemen, the Portuguese team started the Tony Trabert Cup with a triumph of Maurício Brito Gomes about Tim Websterby 6-1 and 7-6(4), but Great Britain equalized through Anthony Perkins (6-3 and 6-2 to Matthieu Garcia) and celebrated the turnaround in the pair, with Perkins and Jim May to beat Garcia and João Marques by 6-3 and 6-1.
At Club Internacional de Foot-Ball, the men’s team of +45 lost 2-1 to Germany. The winning set won the two singles, with Franz Stauder to you Antonio Moura by 6-2 and 7-6(1) and Christian Schaeffkes the import 6-2 and 6-1 a David Coelhobut in the par the Portugal team got an important point thanks to the triumph of Lourenço Santos Lima and Luís Souza Pinto by 6-2, 0-6 and 10-4 against Matthias Hahn and Dirk Stoebitsch.
The only Portuguese team that did not play in this first round of the Veterans World Cup was the +45 women’s team, which will play its debut match on Monday, at the courts clay court of the Estoril Tennis Club, against Sweden.
