Three trees resist the invader again and again. A Saint Jeannortheast of Toulouseof the owners decided to cut down three maple trees out of four, located on the side of their building. But it was without counting on the determination of the inhabitants of Saint-Jean and the surrounding area.
The pruning of the trees was to be done on Tuesday, June 21, 2022. But that day, members of the association North-East of Toulouse in Transition and GNSA (national tree monitoring group), as well as rivers, opposed this action. The pruner had no choice but to refrain from felling the trees for safety reasons.
A petition signed more than 7,000 times.
In the petition initiated by GNSA, the rescue of the three maple trees is considered “in the public interest”. “If you cut down those three maple trees, the temperatures will increase near the bakery “, can we read in particular. A petition signed by almost 7,000 people including the mayor of Saint-Jean, Bruno Espic. A figure that is all the more impressive since the town of Saint-Jean has around 10,000 inhabitants.
But then why cut down these trees?
“It’s human stupidity,” annoyed a local trader. The Syndicate of the co-ownership, at the origin of this request for felling translated a mail to the baker Jean Garcia. The letter tells him, among other things, “that it is impossible for him to use the green space in common for his business”. In effect, the baker rents a place in the condominium which is located right next to these three trees. However, it is not clearly mentioned in the letter that the occupation of this space is at the origin of the desire to cut down the three maple trees.
To pay Cendrine Fromentmember of the GNSA, the union would have mentioned to him “risks for the roof of the building”. The activist further explains that the General Assembly of December 2021, at the origin of the decision, would not have been voted unanimously. “Even if these are young trees around fifteen years old, they allow many people to shelter from the sun’s rays,” adds Cendrine Froment.
Condominium counter-offensive
Anyway, nothing is won for the fervent defenders Saint-Jean maples. The syndicate of co-ownership 1 place Francois Mitterrand intends, indeed, always to cut down these trees.
“I do not have to comment on the decisions of the General Assembly of co-ownership. All of this is in the private domain.”
For the syndicate of co-ownership and Philippe Conte, ” everything is in order “. Having a minutes, which has not been disputed within two months of its notification, the syndicate must cut down the three trees. “It’s my job, I have to carry out the decisions of the General Meetings otherwise I lose my customers”, adds Philippe Conte. Regarding the reason that led to thefelling of treeshe did not recommend commenting on this.
