Load of “fuel taxes in Portugal is at 60%”, highlighted on social networks

Sugar Mizzy July 31, 2022

“You taxes on taxes in Portugal are by 60%“, stands out in one of the publications in question, dated July 10. In 60% of the sale price to the public of gasoline and diesel, it is understood.

There are other examples – more or less recent – that point in the same direction: “Portuguese is so intelligent that paying 60% tax on food wants to ‘protest’ by walking for a week ‘to boycott gas stations’. We really deserve this misery of life.”

“fuels (60% tax socialists) rose again! He says that there will be no austerity”, he jokes, nourishes a post on Facebook, sent to the polygraph to fact checking.

According to the latest data from the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE), contained in the “Bulletin of the Fuel and LPG Market – May 2022” (you can consult here), “the average Public Sale Price (PVP) of the simple gasoline 95 in May compared to the previous month (-1.0%), contradicting the behavior of the price of a barrel of oil on the international market. To face the rise in the price of commercial workers, the Government implemented a ISP weekly review mechanism [variação no ISP, por forma a repercutir as variações da receita de IVA, por litro, que decorram da variação semanal do PVP médio dos combustíveis]. Following this measure, the ISP applied to gasoline registered a decrease of 16.3 cents per liter in May towards April”.

“A component of PVP of greater expression corresponds to the quote and shippingwhich represented in May approximately 46.2% of the total invoice of gasoline, followed by the taxes (43.2%). Thus, it was observed inversion tax and quotation+freight components in the gasoline PVP composition, resulting from the application of the ISP’s weekly review mechanism. biofuels, logistics and reserves, strategic sets represent about 10.6% of the average PVP of simple gasoline 95″.

In turn, “the PVP of simple diesel in April (-4.4%), contradicting the behavior of the price of a barrel of oil in the international market. To face the rise in the price of compounds, the Government implemented a weekly ISP review mechanism. As a result of this last measure, the ISP applied to diesel registered a decrease of 12.7 cents per liter in May compared to April”.

“The largest share of PVP paid by the consumer corresponds to the quote and shipping (48.5%), followed by the value of taxes (36.9%). Similar to what happened with gasoline, there was a inversion of the tax review and quotation+freight components in the composition of the diesel PVP, current of the application of the operating mechanism and commercialization margin, the incorporation of biofuels, logistics and logistics A set of strategic reserves, representing together, about 14.5% of the average PVP of simple diesel”.

Meanwhile, the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG) already has the latest data until the first week of July: 40.6% of taxes on the average price of simple gasoline 95 and 35.4% of taxes on the average price of simple diesel.

With these more recent data, we verify that the tax burden in the average selling prices to the public of simple gasoline 95 and simple diesel, in Portugal, dropped to 40.6% and 35.4%, respectively. Very far, therefore, from the two 60%for which we apply a seal of “False“in the publications in question.
