In concrete terms, it is about the fact that many drivers try to avoid traffic jams on the motorways – which leads to problems on the bypass routes. The driving ban is “a measure taken by the Tyrolean state government to counteract the massive evasive traffic in traffic jams,” it says. “Immediately at the exits, car drivers will not have the opportunity to bypass local traffic jams unless they can be assigned to the destination, source and local traffic,” says the state of Tyrol.
The driving ban applies to all motor vehicles that are in transit in Tyrol – including cars and motorcycles. “Destination, source and local traffic is exempt from the driving bans,” said the government, which speaks of an emergency defense measure. “The increasing problem of alternative traffic in view of the traffic density in combination with roadblocks and sophisticated navigation devices, which react extremely quickly and suggest avoiding traffic jams, is now causing the state of Tyrol to take these measures.”
Do I see the blocked roads in the navigation system?
That’s exactly what’s planned. According to the state of Tyrol, the driving bans are fed into the traffic information system of the Ministry of the Interior and are therefore available to the operators of the navigation devices.
What happens if I avoid a traffic jam and get caught?
Tyrol has announced controls of the driving ban. Violations are punished by the police with fines.
Am I also affected as a holidaymaker on site?
no “Anyone who spends their holidays in the regions mentioned or wants to visit friends and relatives there can continue to drive on the routes that are closed to alternative traffic,” says the ADAC. In the event of a check, however, you have to be able to convince the Austrian officials, for example with a booking confirmation from a hotel.
