Tallaght will be rocking as Ireland look to secure a place in the World Cup play-offs
Ireland have sold out their Women’s World Cup qualifier against Finland on the 1st. September – when victory in Tallaght sealed a place in the play-offs.
Vera Pauw leads the Finns by a point with two matches remaining and they can seal their first play-off spot since 2008 by emulating their win in Helsinki last October.
Tallaght Stadium has a capacity of 7,000, meaning the turnout is a new record for a women’s home team. Tickets were snapped up within hours of their open sale on Wednesday morning, which followed Tuesday’s presale.
That’s 5,238 from Pauw’s first game at the helm, a 3-2 win over Ukraine in October 2019.
The Finns have fired manager Anna Signeul in turmoil on Tuesday after their disappointment in the EC final. They scored just one goal and lost their games against Spain, Denmark and Germany.
Ireland’s final game of the campaign is against fourth-placed Slovakia in Senec on September 6.
Next year’s World Cup will be jointly hosted by New Zealand and Australia. If they complete their task in September, Ireland will enter a complex play-off system in October that will likely require at least two wins to qualify for their first ever major tournament.
