Near Toulouse: in the prison of Seysses, detainees tell of the confinement and the heat wave
At the Seysses remand center, near Toulouse, the last heat waves have been monitored and kept, which are trying to cool off despite the constraints.
The FO Justice Seysses union belched on Twitter. Monday, July 11, in a press release, he sets out the working conditions within the confines of the remand center. During hot weather, the agents are enough. “It’s as hot inside as it is outside. Sometimes the temperature reaches 35° or even 40°”, confides Jérome Combelles, local secretary of FO Seysses, who goes to the prison daily.
Following the incidents that occurred in 2018, guards are forced to wear a vest per 3 kg bullet, a constraint that does not favor heat management for those who ask for an improvement in working conditions.

Swimming pools and fans in the cells
In the prison, the air becomes unbreathable for everyone. And for the detainees, it’s a double penalty. On the Snapchat social network, Mounir*, imprisoned in Seysses prison for several months, details his daily life during the heat waves in his 9 square meter cell. “The cell window only lets in the heat, I feel like I’m in the sun all day,” he says. Values far removed from the 19 degrees recommended for a healthy bedroom…
To manage the touffeur, the convicts are looking for solutions. Without success. “When it’s too hot, we can’t do anything, even if we put iced bottles in the bed to cool it, they warm up very quickly”, explains the young man who confides that “some (detainees) have fans, others inflatable swimming pools”.

Heat is also a sign of tension in this complex universe. “The heat wave may be an additional cause of tension between the contents, even if I cannot confirm it 100%”, adds Jérome Combelles.
