The Bilbao tram will only circulate between Bolueta and Arriaga from July 30 to August 10 due to the renovation of the tracks
The change of lane in the curves of Plazas Circular and Venezuela and Sabino Arana with Zunzunegiá will prevent transit from Arriaga to La Casilla
BILBAO, July 26. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The Bilbao tram will circulate only between the Bolueta and Arriaga stops, between July 30 and August 10, both inclusive, due to track renovation works on the curves located between Plaza Circular and Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires and Plaza Venezuela and Sabino Arana and José Antonio Zunzunegi, which have a budget of 881,726 euros.
As reported by Euskal Trenbide Sarea-Basque Railway Network (ETS) in a statement, the execution of these works simultaneously at various points of the network motivates the suppression of traffic between Arriaga and La Casilla, while at the same time affecting the road traffic in the vicinity of the works.
The tram will circulate again in its entirety, starting with the first service on Thursday, August 11. The modification of the service offered by Euskotren will be indicated by means of posters at the tram stops affected by the works, as well as through the information screens that each stop of the rest of the network has.
Euskal Trenbide Sarea-Basque Railway Network and Euskotren, aware of the inconvenience that the work will cause, apologize in advance to all the people who live in the area and to the users of the service.
JOBS
As indicated by ETS, the renovation of the track basically consists of replacing the deteriorated rail with a new rail, so it will be necessary to lift the tram platform in a section of between 80 and 90 meters in length at the points that are the object of the works.
In addition to the renewal of the rail, its fixing method is also changed, passing to a slab track system based on direct fixing. With this, ETS explained, “a better maintainability of the section in the future is achieved, while at the same time reducing the acoustic impact produced by the tram in its transit through the aforementioned curves”.
The first section of the tramway, the one that runs between Atxuri and Pío Baroja, was inaugurated in 2001. Subsequently, and in different phases, the tramway network has been expanded until reaching the 16 stops that currently serve between Bolueta and LaCasilla.
The sections that are the object of the works in the Plaza Circular, Plaza Venezuela and Sabino Arana with José Antonio Zunzunegi are closed curves with high road and tram traffic, whose lane shows marked wear as the wheels register very forcefully in the radius of the curve.
CONDITIONS TO ROAD TRAFFIC
As for the effects on road traffic, in the curve of the Plaza Circular it will only be possible to circulate on Calle Navarra in an ascending direction. Circulation along Calle Navarra in the direction of Puente del Arenal is cancelled.
In Hurtado de Amézaga, the area closest to the Plaza Circular is reduced from 3 to 2 lanes, the taxi rank located next to the Tourist Office is eliminated and in Buenos Aires street it goes from 2 lanes to a single one. the vicinity of the Plaza Circular.

At the Sabino Arana curve, the A-8 exit via José Antonio Zunzunegi towards Sabino Arana is respected at all times. However, the José Antonio Zunzunegi direction towards the A-8 is canceled during the entire period of works. You can access the A-8 through Alameda de Urkijo or through Felipe Serrate and Luis Briñas streets.
During the course of the works, the commercial tram service will be interrupted between the Abando and La Casilla stops, circulating exclusively between Bolueta and Arriaga, in both directions.
