The goal is to ease Russia’s dependence on gas and prepare for the Kremlin to stop its exports to the European Union.
With the exception of Hungary’s Péter Szijjártó, the energy ministers of the EU member states unanimously approved the European Commission’s emergency plan to reduce gas consumption by 15 percent, Die Welt reports.
The Brussels body came up with the emergency plan on July 20, which aims to ease Russia’s dependence on gas and prepare for the Kremlin to stop its exports to the European Union. German State Secretary for Economic Affairs Sven Giegold revealed in a tweet that only Hungary opposed the emergency plan, which was adopted unanimously, with a huge majority.
Fracture. Soeben the Council of the EU Member States has decided to reduce the consumption of fossil gases between 1.8.22 and 23.3.23 by 15%. Riesenmehrheit, nur Ungarn war dagegen! Hier ein Thread mit ein paar Hintergründen.

The European Commission came up with the plan on July 20, asking the 27 member states to reduce it in eight months between August 2022 and March 2023. For now, the board expects voluntary undertakings, but if the situation turns serious, consumption should be reduced.
