Athletics: Barshim, Lyles and McLaughlin expected in Monaco on August 10 for the Herculis meeting
The stage of the Monegasque athletics meeting, Herculis, is once again breathtaking. There will be a lot of people on the track of the Louis-II.
The Venezuelan Yulimar Rojas is part of this constellation of stars. The triple jump world record holder (15.74 m indoors) will be one of the queens among the three women’s competitions expected at the Louis-II. She will challenge Caterine Ibargüen’s meeting record (15.31m in 2014).
In the sprint, the American Noah Lyles will lead the 200m. A race in which he has just set the third fastest time in history (19”31) to win the world title at home, in Eugene. He is now just behind Usain Bolt’s 19”19 and Yohan Blake’s 19”26.
Her compatriot Sydney McLaughlin could break the world record for the 400m hurdles. At 22, she has just cut more than seven tenths from the previous benchmark she already held. She is the first woman to be under 51″ (50″68).
Duel Barshim-Tamberi at the height
Another highlight will come from the height. Mutaz Barshim will challenge Gianmarco Tamberi, in a duel between the two champions who shared the Olympic title in Tokyo last year. The Qatari, brand new world champion, and the Italian are friends and put on a show.
In javelin, Kelsey-Lee Barber will line up. The Australian has just retained her world crown.
Over 3,000m, the naturalized Kazakh Norah Jeruto will be the big favourite. She has just signed the third performance in history (8’53”03). Crowned in the 200m in Eugene, the Jamaican Shericka Jackson will be at the start of the 100m.
Three other world champions had already been announced by the organizers: Kenyan Faith Kipyegon (1,500m), Jamaican Shelly Anne Fraser Pryce (100m) and American Grant Holloway (110m hurdles). The latter will meet the Jamaican Hansle Parchment, Olympic champion.
Also crowned in Tokyo last summer, the American Katie Nageotte (pole), the Greek Miltiadis Tentoglou (length) and the Ugandan Peruth Chemutai (3,000 m steeple) will be there.
Gressier and Zhoya at the rendezvous
Among the French athletes, Jimmy Gressier, 11th in the 10,000m at Eugène, will line up in the 3,000m. The Northerner will come to work on his speed before the European Championships in Munich (Germany, August 15-21). He will also try to get closer to Mustapha Essaïd’s French record (7’30”78). The latter, made in Monaco, has held since August 8, 1998.
Gressier will be accompanied by Benjamin Robert (1000m), the nugget Sasha Zhoya (110m hurdles) and the two Niçoises who will participate in the meeting for the first time, Camille Seri (400m hurdles) and Margot Chevrier (pole).
The meeting will offer 14 events:
