‘Is the Netherlands still manageable then?’
Governor of Limburg and former SP leader Emile Roemer is concerned about the political fragmentation in the Netherlands. “There is hardly any large party anymore. That is a problem,” Roemer said on Saturday in the NPO Radio 1 program WNL In de Kantine.
He fears that in the future “twenty parties will be needed to represent everyone. Is a country like the Netherlands still manageable”, Roemer wonders. According to the former MP, it is currently “much more about the person” in The Hague. and party ideals fade into the background.
The fragmentation makes it “really difficult to tackle major problems structurally”, says Roemer. “The weather should be much more about ideals. You have to stand behind a party’s ideas instead of the voter running from hot to her every time.”

Roemer, party leader of the SP between 2012 and 2018, has great admiration for his successor, Lilian Marijnissen. “I’m a big fan,” he says. “If you look at interviews from five years ago, you can see that she has not changed at all in the period that she is now in The Hague. She is and remains exactly who she is and stands for what she finds important. I really appreciate that.”
