In the heat, See closes – this worm is the reason – Austria-News
Worm infestation and lack of staff: In the middle of the sweltering heat & now the first bathrooms are closing, those suffering from the heat are left dry.
For the second time, the swimming lake Wechselland in Pinggau had to be closed in Salzburg, as reported by the ORF. The reason for this is cercaria, which spread in the lake, which is filled with drinking water, during the heat wave. There is nothing to be seen with swimming at the moment, because the larvae of the fluke cause unpleasant reactions. Transmitted from water snails to ducks, cercariae also infest humans and initially only cause a slight burning sensation or itching.
After a few hours, however, those affected experience severe itching, often with severe reddening of the skin, blistering and pustules. If you scratch yourself, you can easily catch additional infections – the symptoms subside without medical treatment, but often only after up to 20 days. There were outbreaks of this kind in Austria several years ago, and around 20 years ago 300 people were suddenly affected in Styria.
The thermal baths are closed due to a lack of staff
According to ORF, the family pool at the Rupertustherme in Bad Reichenhall (Bavaria), a popular bathing destination for local vacationers, was also closed. The reason here, however, is completely different: the thermal baths simply cannot find any more staff. According to an insider, no one wants to work on Saturdays or Sundays or on public holidays and in early or late shifts anymore. So now only the thermal bath area remains open, but the attached family pool is closed.
Speaking of looking for employees: The shortage of skilled workers is not only felt in the catering and tourism sectors. The Graz hairdresser Ralph Thornbird is also desperate. The hair professional has invited a total of 46 applicants to an interview over the past ten months. However, not one came. The man from Graz has been looking for a 40-hour employee since October 2021. “I’m actually constantly on the lookout and am currently working for three so that I can keep the business going,” he told the “Krone”.
