Hungary-France 45:40
SUMMARY
THE Sugár Battai, Renáta Katona, Liza Pusztai, Luca Szűcs The Hungarian national team made it to the final by defeating the Uzbeks, the Bulgarians, the Italians and the Spanish.
The Hungarian ladies started fantastically against the French, winning the first four aces by 20:10. In the fifth ace, the French could be happy for the first time, but they did not get much closer. Moreover, after the sixth and seventh acts (Szűcs and Battai both won 5:1), the Hungarian women already led by 16 points!
The French make sure that we don’t get too happy too soon. Caroline Queroli – it must be admitted – fought brilliantly and defeated Szűcsö 12:5. Liza Pusztai was able to start the last ace with a 40:31 lead, who lost 9:5, but that was more than enough for the final success.
The Hungarian women’s epee team achieved a historic victory, as we had never won World Cup gold in this women’s discipline before.
The last minutes
The women’s sword team won the third medal of the Hungarian delegation in Egypt. On Monday, Áron Szilágyi won the individual sword, and on Thursday, the sword team composed of Szilágyi, András Szatmári, Csanád Gémesi, and Tamás Decsi came second.
FROM TIME TO TIME
9th ace, Liza Pusztai–Sára Balzer 45:40 (5:9)
Balzer hits first, but Pusztai fights back. Then Pusztai brings in the 42nd tus as well. Balzer equalizes within the ace (42:33). The French is doing well, but Pusztai excels – 44:38 – and all that’s left is a draw. After that, the Frenchman finds it, then Pusztai finds it, but after the video it is given to the Frenchman (44:40). Pusztai doesn’t show mercy, after that he delivers the decisive blow: the Hungarian women’s sword team is world champion!
8th asso, Luca Szűcs–Caroline Queroli 40:31 (5:12)
Queroli is a difficult opponent for Szűcs, he gives hits one after the other (10:2), and the advantage is already reduced to eight (38:30). He must definitely reach 40, Szűcs can only come down after him. Szűcs gets a lot of hits, but it is very difficult for him to reach the 40th hit.
7th ace, Battai Sugár–Sara Noutcha 35:19 (5:1)
Battai fights brilliantly, the momentum of the Hungarian women remains, and she brings the ace to 5:1. Only ten more!
6th asso, Luca Szűcs–Sara Balzer 30:18 (5:1)
Szűcs gets off to a fantastic start, scoring three points in a row, before Balzer makes a beautification. After one hit each, the French are successful again, but after the video they award the hit to us!
5th ace, Liza Pusztai–Sarah Noutcha 25:17 (5:7)
The first two strokes belong to the French, but Pusztai improves after that. Noutcha fights very well and brings his team up. He gives the hits one after the other, but luckily Pusztai pulls himself together and gets out with only two strokes.
4th ace, Battai Sugár–Caroline Queroli 20:10 (5:3)
Battai fights brilliantly, confidently surpassing the Frenchman by 5:3!
3rd ace, Luca Szűcs–Sarah Noutcha 15:7 (5:2)
Noutcha opens with two quick strokes, but Sz would gain momentum, equalize and then take the lead (3:2). After that, Szűcs finds and then gets the fifth point with a parade post.
2nd ace, Battai Sugár–Sara Balzer 10:5 (5:3)
The first shot belongs to the French, followed by a defense and a counterattack (1:1). One more hit each, then Battai scores two points (2:4). Then the Frenchman finds, but Battai takes the last trick, winning this ace 5:3.
1st ace, Liza Pusztai–Caroline Queroli 5:2
The first tip is given by Pusztai, then the second as well. Then the Frenchman improves with a pre-cut, but Pusztai’s pre-cut also sits after him (3:1). The Frenchman then defends Pusztai’s attack and finds it, but then we reach the goal again. Then there is the fifth hit, a great start!
The final starts at 17:45!
HISTORY
THE Sugár Battai, Renáta Katona, Liza Pusztai, Luca Szűcs composed team defeated the Uzbeks and then the Bulgarians on Friday, securing their place among the top eight.
The quarter-final matches were held already on Saturday, the last day of the World Cup, and our team played against the Italians for the semi-finals. The match was very fluctuating, there were 0:5 and 11:1 scores from the Hungarian point of view, but the Hungarians were in the lead from the end of the fourth match until the end of the eighth match. The Italians sometimes closed closer, and even reversed in the penultimate battle, because Katona gave little push, but in the end Pusztai beat him 6:3 Rossella Gregoriot, and this resulted in a two-run Hungarian victory.
In the semi-finals, the Hungarians met the Spaniards, whom they proved to be better than at the European Championship in June. As it turns out, the balance of power has not changed since then, and the battle ended with Hungarian success again.
After Pusztai’s 5:2 victory, Battai lost 5:3, but three Hungarian victories followed, and two of them were 5:0. The 25:12 lead made the Hungarians confident, while the Spanish were more uncertain, so they had no chance to catch up. Even Szűcs, who came on as a substitute, brought his ace to 5:2, so the end was a superior, 14-stroke victory.
During the march, the coaches also gave advice from the stands, and on two occasions they clearly indicated that the Hungarian fencer in Pász should ask for a video.
The final starts at 17:45.
