World Fencing Championships – Belgium, exited in the round of 16 of the team foil by France, finishes 10th
The Belgian men’s foil team, 19th in the world, was beaten in the round of 16 by France 45 touches to 30 at the world fencing championships on Friday in Cairo, Egypt. At the end of the classification matches, Belgium finished 10th.
Opposed to the 2nd world nation which lined up without Enzo Lefort (FIE 4) the new individual world champion, the three left-handers Mathieu Nijs (FIE 125), 20 years old, Stef Van Campenhout (FIE 83), 24 years old, and Stef De Greef (FIE 103), 24, was trailing 15 hits to 9 by the trio Pierre Loisel (FIE 18), Alexandre Sido (FIE 17) and Maximilien Chastanet (FIE 12) after three bouts. The rest of the meeting did not allow the situation to be rectified. Only De Greef managed to win one of the nine duels (6-5) at the expense of Loisel. In the round of 16, the Belgians had easily disposed of 45 touches to 26 from Argentina 16th in the FIA ranking represented by Augusto Antonio Servello (FIE 41), Nicolas Marino (FIE 85) and Dante Cerquetti (FIE 71). In the first of the classification matches for places 9 to 16, Belgium beat Germany 45 touches to 37 before beating Austria in the second 45 touches to 38.
