Uwe Seeler passed away: the DFB team played against Austria with a black ribbon
Germany will wear black ribbons against Austria in the quarter-finals of the European Championship tonight because of the death of soccer legend Uwe Seeler.
This was announced by Annette Seitz, press spokeswoman for the DFB women, early on Thursday evening (07/21/22) a few hours before the start of the duel with the Alpine Republic (9 p.m.). Shortly before, it had become known that Seeler died at the age of 85 with his family at home in Norderstedt. There will be a minute’s silence at Brentford stadium before the game.
The honorary captain of the German national team and honorary citizen of his hometown of Hamburg recently struggled with health problems. The attacker, who only played for HSV at club level in his career, made 72 international appearances and scored 43 goals. “Uns Uwe”, as he was known in Hamburg, was voted “Footballer of the Year” three times (1960, 1964 and 1970).
