Stumbling stones smeared with swastikas, shame in Florence – Chronicle
Florence, 21 July 2022 – A shameful and outrageous gesture, a stain to be erased as soon as possible, the one that the residents of via Scialoja and via Bovio found this afternoon. Walking along the sidewalks of District 2, in fact, you can easily see how the stumbling blocks have been smeared with black. The stumbling blocks are an initiative of the German artist Gunter Demnig to deposit, in the urban and social fabric of European cities, a widespread memory of the citizens deported to the Nazi extermination camps, and in Florence there are 73. At least three were vandalizedincluding those in memory of Giorgio Levi delle Trezze, Xenia Haya Poliakov and Lucia Levi, hit by a black spray can, with the abbreviation FGC next to it, attributable to a far left anti-Semitic movement. As if that were not enough, in via Scialoja, under a door, always with a black spray can, the logo of the Nazi SS was designed.
The president of District 2 also intervened on the incident, Michele Pierguidi, who wrote on his social channels: “I trust in cameras but in divine justice”. In the meantime, the Digos has already been activated, which has sent on the spot to acquire a patrol to better understand the situation and eventual images from the cameras present in the two streets.
