fight liver disease in children
MLD, whose Honorary Presidency is ensured by Princess Charlene, is the only Monegasque association that represents all childhood liver diseases in the Principality.
This month, the article in our series devoted to associations in the Principality and the Côte d’Azur, focuses on Monegasque liver diseasecreated in 2011.
A balloon, a sun and a smiling child. Within Monaco Liver Disorder, it is hope that predominates. This association, founded by Carla Fadoul Shechter and which has around sixty members, works with children suffering from liver disease and their families. But always with a smile and compassion.
The founder and president of Monaco Liver Disorder fights to support research, but also and above all to allow parents to be close to their children in the event of hospitalization, in particular thanks to parent/child rooms in hospitals.
” The aim of the association is to support research, but also to improve pediatric services. For example, we are in the process of renovating three pediatric departments at the L’Archet 2 hospital in Nice. This is a first for an association: we make tailor-made “, explains Carla.
Murphy beds, materials, equipment… Everything is chosen with care, purchased directly from the source, to ensure comfort and quality for caregivers and patients alike.

Better support children and families
The aim of these top-of-the-range care rooms: to offer a better welcome to parents of sick children and to enable hospital staff to work in excellent conditions. ” It can help with healing, even if they’re not magicians. You can have the best doctors, but if your child’s body doesn’t want to follow, it won’t follow. But a multitude of little things can help, it’s part of the therapy. Parent/child rooms are being created at L’Archet 2 in neonatal care, pediatric intensive care and cancerology and rare diseases. These three services provided to the Paca region, Corsica and Monaco “, explains Carla.
In the Principality, on the other hand, it will be necessary to wait a little longer to see a structure emerge from the ground. And if Carla already has an idea in mind, no question of revealing too much for the moment.
Last part of the association, and not the least: raising awareness about organ donation. ” We can all need it one dayCarla comments. Each body can donate up to seven organs. And the first organ transplanted in children is precisely the liver. »
And of the liver diseases that develop in childhood, the best known is biliary atresia (BVA) – or jaundice. With one case out of 18,000 births in Europe, it results in obstruction of the extra and intrahepatic bile ducts.
If left untreated, it leads to the death of the child before the age of three. Hence the need to act quickly, but also to recognize the signs that should alert from the first day of the baby’s life (in this case, discoloration of the stools and dark urine). ” The faster we treat, the better the child’s chances of recovery “recalls Carla.
And the more the parents are present, the more likely the child is to recover. Even if, once again, nothing is ever guaranteed in terms of health, Carla Fadoul Shechter insists: hope, love, benevolence and good humor can be extremely beneficial for healing.

Supported by the Monegasque Red Cross, AMADE and the Prince’s Government – and in particular Princess Charlene, Honorary President of the association – the volunteers of Monaco Liver Disorder now hope to obtain financial support from the French authorities. . ” We are a Monegasque association which works mainly in France, and the project is Franco-Monegasque, Carla recalls.
We hope that the French authorities will eventually come forward. Monaco, on the other hand, is a land of gifts. NOTWe would also like to increase the number of membershipsbecause becoming a member means expressing your desire to be informed of the association’s activities, supporting its actions and participating by voting at General Meetings. »
