Picnic table, street furniture, deckchairs… This Monday, July 18, 2022Toulouse residents were able to discover the St. Peter’s Bridge specially fitted out for this summer.
Until August 22, the work will be exclusively reserved for pedestrians and cyclists. The inhabitants of Toulouse take advantage of a new setting in the city to spend a more pleasant summer. At the origin of this initiative, a proposal made by the inhabitants as part of the “Left Bank – Right Bank” development project in Toulouse Métropole.
A popular project
With the heat Currently, very few people were there to take advantage of these facilities. The bridge being exposed in full sun, difficult in the middle of the day to appreciate the installations. But some Toulousains are already projecting themselves towards their summer evenings.
“It can be really interesting to come and do a picnic with the family in the evening, because during the day it is too hot”, confides a resident of the Pink City. “I find it original and surprising to see this kind of thing on the road. It’s really nice to take a walk without the presence of cars”, adds a Parisian tourist.
A customer boost for bars
While in summer the students are no longer present in the bars of Saint-Pierre square, the development of the bridge should bring back more customers for these establishments.
Even if the regulars of the nightlife can only consume on site, this initiative will help boost the number of customers. “It will allow the city to breathe a little more without cars,” rejoices Fred, manager at the Basque bar.
A diversion installed
As the saying goes, the happiness of some is the misfortune of others… and some motorists caught off guard are annoyed by the closed to traffic from the Saint-Pierre bridge.
A diversion has been put in place so that they can still cross over the next five weeks. Road users must therefore pass either by the Pont des Catalans (in both directions) or by the Pont Neuf (in the Esquirol – Saint-Cyprien direction).
