Cocorico for the Pink City. Tuesday July 12, 2022, Minister of Higher Education and Research Sylvie Retailleau announced since Grenoble (Isere), the labeling, by the State, of the TIRIS project, led by the University of Toulouse. An announcement made within the framework of France 2030 and the second wave of the call for projects entitled ExcellenceS.
For “accompaniment of transitions”
TIRIS, the acronym for Toulouse Initiative Research’s Impact of Society, brings together the Toulouse university and scientific community around “supporting transitions” and “building the world of tomorrow”. The result of several months of work, “TIRIS aims to meet the growing expectations of populations in favor of a more inclusive, more respectful and more sustainable future, but also to inspire the renewal of public policies and to contribute to the transformation of production and consumption”, indicating the various partners of the project in a press release.
With an envelope of 38 million euros, the Toulouse project is the most financially supported during this second wave.
What is TIRIS?
TIRIS brings together higher education institutions (Toulouse 1-Capitole, Jean Jaurès, Paul Sabatier, INPT, Insa and Sup Aero) as well as international research organizations such as CNRS, Inserm and Météo France.
Science is at the heart of TIRIS, articulated around three challenges:
- Understanding and supporting healthy living and well-being
- Understanding global changes and their impact on societies
- Accelerate transitions towards sustainable practices or behaviors (mobility, energy, resources, industrial changes, etc.)
The challenge of the future of the University of Toulouse
Involvement of citizens and joint work between universities on these themes are the basis of this pact. Because behind this successful call for projects, it is the future and the management method of the University of Toulouse that is at stake.
“The ambition is clear. For the site, it is now a question of creating the future University of Toulouse, bringing together in a common dynamic its founding members: the universities Toulouse Capitole, Jean Jaurès, Paul Sabatier, INP, Insa, the INU Champollion and Isae-Supaero. The University of Toulouse retains the legal personality of its constituent establishments. This development will allow the site to be part of a trajectory of creation of a Great Research University (GUR), in order to better promote the exceptional academic potential of Toulouse”.
These new statutes will be subject to validation by the boards of directors of these founding establishments, from 1uh on September 21, 2022, before the creation of the experimental Comue (Community of Universities and Establishments) on 1uh January 2023.
A crisis in academia in early 2022
It should be remembered that a major crisis shook the university environment at the beginning of spring 2022 with the declared desire for autonomy of the Toulouse School of Economics (TSE) – previously under the supervision of the University Toulouse 1-Capitole -, which aims to have the status of Grand Establishment.
