PSV Eindhoven for Monaco
L’AS Monaco will face Dutch club PSV Eindhoven in the third preliminary round of the Champions League, after the draw made on Monday in Nyon (Switzerland), at UEFA headquarters. The first leg will be played at the Louis-II stadium on August 2 or 3, with a return to Eindhoven on August 9. Meanwhile, the play-off draw is scheduled for August 2.
If it wins, ASM will therefore still have to compete in a play-off to join the group stage of the C1. In the event of elimination in the 3rd qualifying round, or in the play-offs, the ASM will be reversed in the group stage of the Europa League.
Favorable history
But this draw bodes well: the Principality club already dominated PSV last year, in the group stage of the Europa League, winning in the Netherlands (1-2), with goals from Myron Boadu then Sofiane Diop, before drawing a match (0-0) at Louis-II.
ASM also crossed paths with the Phillips club in 2003/2004, for the best European season in its history which had taken it to the C1 final, lost against FC Porto (3-0). Again AS Monaco, then coached by Didier Deschamps, won in Eindhoven (1-2) before conceding a draw at the foot of the Rock (1-1). On the other hand, the following season, PSV had eliminated Monaco in the round of 16 of the C1 (1-0, 2-0). But the history between the two clubs remains favorable to ASM.
