Brussels assuages concerns about EU sanctions on Russia
The European Union is not to despair of the consequences of which it has confirmed Russia. Nor are they slackening in that country’s challenge, the statement of EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell after consultations with the foreign ministers of the EU countries.
Borrell speaks out in words against “European leaders are commodities”. He refers to critics as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. According to them, the EU is mainly cutting itself in the fingers. The Russian economy and war machine seem to suffer less from the punishment than expected in Brussels.
But the clash with Russia certainly did, Borrell, who has been strewn with numbers in recent days. On the other hand, he puts into perspective the toll that Europe is closing due to the higher costs of a major criticism of the complaint. After consulting the foreign ministers, he even pulled out a chart to show that the oil price has been deep since the announcement of a European oil embargo.
The ‘sanction’ that can be found in the EU cannot contain itself, the highest diplomat of the union. That is exactly what Russian President Vladimir Putin is gambling on, he is sure. Borrell asks for “strategic patience”.
The foreign ministers in Brussels are discussing a number of tightening of the foreign bows. But it is actually mainly about closing loopholes in the measures, says Borrell. None of the EU countries has objected so far. Their ambassadors are now discussing the details.
