Employment in Luxembourg: Cross-border learning is on the rise
In recent years, the number of cross-border apprenticeship placements has steadily increased, from 34 in 2011 to 98 in 2021, according to figures from Adem. The same trend can be seen in the number of declared cross-border apprenticeship positions.
“The Greater Region offers enormous learning opportunities, both for candidates and for Luxembourg companies. Work-study training is the best remedy against youth unemployment. More and more companies are looking for this kind of profile,” explains Daniel Schroeder, apprenticeship advisor for the Chamber of Trades, the Chamber of Employees and the Ministry of National Education. As a general rule, “in order for a cross-border apprenticeship contract to be concluded, the training must not already have been refused in Luxembourg”, he specifies.
The trades for which many cross-border apprenticeship contracts are concluded are “optician, heating engineer and sanitary installer, system designer, event technician, but also building trades such as structural work and wood”, list Daniel Schroeder. As with any apprenticeship, the period for concluding cross-border apprenticeship contracts extends from this Friday to October 31.
