Firstborn son of Georgios Papageorgiou and Alexandra Gimba, Nikolaos Papageorgiou was born in 1930 in Siatista Kozani.
Died at the age of 92, Nikolaos Papageorgiou, the great national benefactor and one of the most important business factors in the fur industry. Together with his recently deceased brother Leonidas, they were donors of the Papageorgiou General Hospital, in Thessaloniki.
Firstborn son of Georgios Papageorgiou and Alexandra Gimba, Nikolaos Papageorgiou was born in 1930 in Siatista Kozani.
Having lost his early life in the 1940 war, he was forced to work as a child to support his father’s family. The difficult conditions of life armed him with courage and perseverance. Studious and tireless, he started his professional activity in 1953 together with Leonidas and Apostolos’ brothers. From early on, it focused on the production and trade of fur, always with the aim of exporting to foreign markets.
His visionary spirit and entrepreneurial spirit elevated the family’s companies to the top of Greece as early as 1963. The Papageorgiou name became synonymous with quality and pioneering, and in the 1970s and 1980s it dominated not only Europe but also the global market.
A man of courage and social sensitivity, Nikolaos Papageorgiou did not limit himself to the helm of his active group of businesses. Together with his brother Leonidas, they created the Papageorgiou Foundation in 1991. Having a vision and goal of offering to Greek society, they allocated 30 million dollars and undertook the construction and equipment of Papageorgiou General Hospital in Thessaloniki.
Plousia was his philanthropic contribution and social work in his hometown, the historic city of Siatista, where he donated for the construction and maintenance of the Gymnasium and Lyceum and the reconstruction of the “Agios Dimitrios” and “Prophetis Ilias” churches. He granted scholarships to economically weak students of the Municipality of Voi, to cover the costs of their university studies.
He was married to Anna Tzioura, with whom they had two children, George and Marko.

“A great Greek benefactor, Nikolaos Papageorgiou, donor of the Papageorgiou Hospital, said goodbye to us today. We will always be grateful to him for his contribution to Health. Condolences to his family”, says the Minister of Health, Thanos Plevris, in his message.
