the shops open every Sunday in the summer… Even if it’s debated
The sales have landed in the principality since July 1st. For the occasion, more than 250 shops remain open on Sundays. Good news for the economy, but the measure does not only make people happy.
Promotional labels sit proudly in the windows of Monegasque stores. Until August 15, reductions will be in order.
This year, the merchants also invite you to meet every Sunday for the “Monaco Sunday Experience”.
Nearly 285 brands and participants. Among them, all the shops of the Metropole Shopping Monte-Carlo, One Monte-Carlo and the Fontvieille shopping center.
The list of stores is available on the website monacosundayexperience.com.
Divided opinions
A Sunday opening mentioned in the columns of Monaco-Hebdo by Alexandre Pasta, President of the Union of Shopkeepers and Craftsmen of Monaco (UCAM): “You have to stay open on Sundays for a momentum to be recreated. »
“We are discussing this with the government. We cannot force the opening of shops. But we all need to be open during the very important weekends of the year. »
Some merchants are resistant to this idea because of the low attendance in certain neighborhoods.
long standing question
The debate is not new. At the end of 2018, the National Council proposed a law to authorize retail businesses to open on Sundays.
A change in legislation approved in July 2019 after much discussion.
The text then aimed to fight against competition in the region and on the Internet, to develop the economy of the principality and to strengthen the attractiveness of Monaco.
Previously these signs could only open on permit and about fifteen Sundays in the year.
The activity is still based “on the principle of employee volunteering, compensation and the right of withdrawal”.
