The Netherlands continues to suffer at the European Championship: Van Veenendaal drops out with shoulder injury | European Football Championship 2022 women
Van Veenendaal sustained the shoulder injury in the early stages of the first group match against Sweden. She collided with Stefanie van der Gragt and Lynn Wilms and injured her right shoulder.
The goalkeeper will no longer play at this European Championship and will now return to the Netherlands. It’s not entirely clear what’s going on with her shoulder.
“It has caused terrible news,” national coach Mark Parons. “Leading for Sari of course, but also for our whole team. Sari is much more than a player of our squad. She is our captain and a very important leader. We will miss her greatly.”
Jacintha Weimar is like her alternate version. Feyenoord’s goal was on the standby list and UEFA regulations prescribe that goalkeepers may be replaced during the tournament in the event of a demonstrable injury.
In addition to Van Veenendaal and Groenen, the Orange Lionesses also saw defender Aniek and turntable Danielle van de Donk drop out. Nouwen will remain with the selection, but will not be fit for the next group match against Portugal.
