Bulgaria won 6 gold, 8 silver and 19 bronze medals at the Balkan Sambo Tournament in Sofia
Sofia. Over the past weekend, the Balkan Sambo Tournament, fully financed by the Association of Bulgarian Sambo Players (ABS), took place in the Sofia sports hall.
At the tournament, young sambi players from 7 countries competed: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Moldova, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey and Bulgaria. Our country is represented by 12 sports clubs. This tournament has become the strongest sports event for the “cadet” age category for sambi players in Bulgaria.
A day before the competition, a congress of the Balkan Sambo Federation is held, at which the delegates made important decisions for the development of the Sambo sport on the Balkan Peninsula. One of these decisions is the election of Mr. Dimitar Dimitrov as the acting President of the Balkan Sambo Federation. Another important decision made unanimously at the congress is that this tournament becomes annual and will bear the name of ZMS Ivan Doctorov, which started a year ago.
The respected event was attended by guests and like-minded people from different countries, prominent sambo players and judokas, world and European champions, representatives of the Executive Committee of the European Sambo Federation and the executive director of the Moscow Regional Sambo Federation. At the opening of the tournament, ABS chairman Mr. Dimitar Dimitrov congratulated all the participants. In his speech, he offered the care for sambo in Bulgaria and around the world and the readiness to help its development and improvement. Mr. Dimitrov emphasized his goal to rebuild the interrupted continuity between generations during the years of the previous administration of the Federation in Bulgaria. In connection with this goal, he presented honorary plaques to the wives of the prominent sambi players of the past – Oleg Pavlikenov and Ivan Doctorov, recalling all the sports achievements of the two.
The vocal group Bonbon was invited to sing at the event, which performed an emotional performance of the Bulgarian national anthem at the opening of the tournament. Graduates with assessed educational requirements from the newly established ABS sports club “SOP Sport and Sambo for Development” with coach Emil Neshev were also present, who performed wrestling matches and demonstrated in front of everyone the therapeutic and beneficial impact of the sport of sambo on these assessed children.
Although the competition was contested and long, the results satisfied all participants. The Bulgarian teams won 6 gold, 8 silver and 19 bronze medals.
