U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup – Belgium crushes Mexico and offers its first success
Belgium clinched their first victory at the Women’s Under-17 Basketball World Cup with a 92-43 win over Mexico on Sunday in Debrecen, Hungary.
On Saturday, the young Belgians coached by Philip Wolk lost 55-39 against Hungary. They will face Japan again on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Belgium was drafted due to the exclusion of Russia and Belarus. Against the Mexicans, Belgium made the difference in the third quarter winning 31-9. Kyra Bruyndonckx finished top scorer for the Belgian side with 20 points. Sixteen countries are divided into four groups and four and all reach the second round. The Belgian group then crosses with group B (France, Slovenia, Australia and Argentina) for the knockout stages on Wednesday. The quarter-finals are scheduled for Friday, the semi-finals on Saturday and the finals on Sunday. This is the 6th Belgian participation in a World Cup, among young people, all in women’s basketball. Belgium took 5th place in the U21 World Cup in 2007 in Moscow, 4th in the U17 World Cup in 2010 in Toulouse, 4th in the U19 World Cup in Bangkok in 2019, 6th in the U19 World Cup in 2015 in Chekhov (Moscow) and 7th at the U17 World Cup in 2012 in Amsterdam.
