Florence, Costa San Giorgio invaded by waste: no bins, bags on the street
“Door to door cannot work at Costa San Giorgio“. Marco Pranzini of the «Via de ‘Bardi» committee is laconic, while showing the photographic dossier collected by the residents of this hilly area in the shadow of Forte Belvedere. In the shots, small stacked baskets overflowing, street corners submerged by rubbish, sidewalks overflowing with sacks, broken deckchairs, cardboard boxes. With the mockery of the signs posted by the inhabitants of the coasts, completely ignored: “This is not a landfill and the area is under video surveillance.” Everything useless. And Pranzini explains why: “Around 2016, the undifferentiated bins were removed from the neighborhood as a function of door to door”. A boomerang choice: “Unfortunately the neighborhood is less and less inhabited by residents, due to the explosion of bed and breakfast and airbnb. The tourist who perhaps stays for two or three days certainly does not start recycling, either out of laziness or unawareness ».
The result is that when the same tourists come out of their houses, to get rid of the garbage, they no longer find containers nearby: “The closest ecological islands are at the bells in piazza dei Mozzi and in Lungarno Torrigiani”. And so here’s the garbage piling up at every corner: «As soon as a tourist sees bags on the ground he believes that this is the place for disposal». In the summer, with the increase in short positions and the heat, the piles of rubbish become more numerous and smelly: «Attracting cockroaches and mice». The criticality concerns Costa San Giorgio, Costa dei Magnoli and vicolo del Canneto. The committee proposed to Alia to put some bins back to contain the phenomenon a little. However, the answer would have been negative: “We do not understand how Alia justifies, in their reports on the undifferentiated less waste thanks to the door to door, the loads abandoned in our streets”, concludes Pranzini.
The story has already been dealt with by Florentine courier in May 2018. Even then the residents longed for the caps in front of Forte Belvedere and at the intersection with Costa Scarpuccia. The discomfort was also confirmed by the Villa Bardini Foundation: «In the street there are no baskets: we have two and they are besieged by tourists, who throw anything into us. And then the fines are up to us ».
