The second head found in the same area belongs to a young woman and dates to the Imperial Times. The estimates of archaeologists.
On a marble statuette which belongs to the iconography of the goddess Aphrodite belongs to the head found last February in the attic of an apartment in the center of Thessaloniki.
The three-member committee of archaeologists that studied the head, estimated that the head dates back to the Late Hellenistic Periodprobably around 200 BC
The head was found by the 35-year-old, new owner of the apartment, who had just bought it under renovation, while the previous owner had died.
The owner who was cleaning the place, found two statue heads carefully hidden in the attic, as well as a number of related documents and informed the authorities.
As for the second marble head, according to the estimates of the archaeologists, it allegedly belongs to a young woman, with no further details released. The head dates back to the Imperial Times, while a parting braid worn on the front of the head is indicative and is a characteristic element of women’s headdresses over a long period of time, from the classics to the Romans. The head of the young woman is rendered realistically and is – like the one attributed to Aphrodite – a find of particularly great archaeological value.
However, it is difficult to ascertain how the two heads came to be in the possession of the deceased homeowner, as well as where they came from.
It is recalled that on Tuesday another marble head of a female statue was also found in an apartment on the beach avenue of Thessaloniki, which was handed over to the authorities.
The head was found by the janitor of the apartment building, as he was taking care of the house, while the archaeologists who performed a first autopsy in the euro built that it dates to the Late Greek Era, around 200 BC.
