Super League – Led by 16 points, Toulouse Olympique overthrows Wakefield – Rugby League
First match of this Magic Weekend and already an ultra-important duel in the maintenance race with this clash between Toulouse and Wakefield.
Wakefield comes out of two fairly severe defeats with 120 points conceded in 2 games. Toulouse for its part recovered with a great victory against Hull KR. Wakefield enters this game better and looks less crispy. Liam Hood behind the down take advantage of the attention of the Olympian defense to open the scoring (6-0). On the following action, Wakefield inherits two consecutive defeats and takes the points. Jowitt allows Wakefield to lead 14-4. Toulouse is cornered and struggling to get out. Sangaré loses the ball after a release and Wakefield is in a good position. Jacob Miller dodges Gigot and serves Fifita in the interval which will score. Jowitt converted and Wakefield now leads 20-4.
After another loss of ball, Wakefield is again in good position just before the break. But Miller commits a forward and Toulouse can break free. Fifita takes a yellow card before half-time and leaves Wakefield at 12 for 10 minutes. Halftime is whistled on the score of 20-4 for Wakefield after a missed first act completed for Toulouse.
Toulouse reverses everything in 10 minutes
As soon as the recovery, Toulouse went on the attack. Gigot misses his kick but Wakefield commits a forward. On the following action, Belmas arrives well launched and collapses in the in-goal. It’s transformed and Toulouse is only led 20-10. We have been playing for 5 minutes in the second half and Toulouse attack and take advantage of their numerical superiority. Ultimately, Matty Russell scored the 3rd try for his team. Hankinson transforms and Toulouse returns to 20-16. Toulouse is on fire and Wakefield concedes several sixes again. Peats appears to score but the referee asks for the video. The try is granted and allows Toulouse to catch up in 8 minutes. Hankinson transforms and Toulouse is in front for the first time in the match 20-22.
Wakefield is no longer there but finds Fifita on the pitch. The Trinity recovers a hot ball and will be able to free itself. After a new foul, Butler receives a yellow card and Wakefield is again at 12. Toulouse is in a trial situation and Wakefield commits a new foul. After a good action, Armitage seems to lose the ball which Schaumkel flattens in the in-goal. The referee asks for the video which grants the test to Toulouse. Hankinson transforms and Toulouse is at +8 (20-28). Wakefield continues to foul and after a forward, the TO plays a good two against one. Ashall-Bott shifts Russell who scores a new try. Hankinson does not convert and Toulouse leads 20-32.
Wakefield is again at 13 but continues with the faults and does not appear dangerous. We enter the last 10 minutes of play and the intensity of the match has fallen. Nevertheless Toulouse seeks to knock out his opponent and Hankinson is close to scoring. On the other side, Whitbread is close to reducing the mark but is stopped on the line. Wakefield insists but it is Tony Gigot who manages to recover an ultra important ball. There are 4 minutes left and Wakefield loses another ball after a fine defensive gesture from Lucas Albert.
Toulouse holds and misses an interception. In the last minute, Tanginoa reduced the mark and Jowitt converted 26-32. There are 6 seconds left and Wakefield tries desperately to score but in front of his in-goal, Armitage intercepts and scores. It is transformed and Toulouse wins 26-38. A crucial success which brings Toulouse closer to 2 points from their opponent of the day. Wakefield can blame himself after having managed the first period well.
