Megagorgon, between mythology and raw reality
Facing the Imperial Palace, immersed in a corner of water, the rock Megagorgon with acid colors takes place. Made of resin, to which are incorporated various plastic objects, from cans to soccer balls, this synthetic work by Ugo Schiavi marks a real contrast with its environment. The mountain and Lake Annecy in the background of the work, made in the studio of Nicolas Pichelin, in Thônes, a perspective of Nature and the artificial, such was the will of the artist .
But this apparent contrast nonetheless sets aside the coherence and logic of this project. Already the etymology of the name of the work, “gorgon”, refers to a mythological creature, a snake-headed chimera. A perfect name for this mutant stone, made from plastic. And paradoxically, this mythical origin recalls an element which today is a very concrete reality: the plastimogerate. A rock born from plastic pollution that has become part of the geological process. This phenomenon is here extrapolated and presented in a statuary way.
the Megagorgon appears as “a telescoping between two anachronistic eras”. He also recalls Ugo Schiavi’s postulate, according to which humanity will probably not survive the consequences of extreme pollution, but nature will always adapt.
