In Toulouse, the pianist Jean-Baptiste Doulcet, will bring the dinosaurs back to life
The musician accompanied “Le Monde Perdu”, a silent film from 1925, on Sunday evening July 10, at the Jardin Raymond-VI.
This is not the first time that Jean-Baptiste Doulcet, 30, has sought the right note for “The Lost World”. But, in Toulouse, it will be a unique session: the musician will improvise throughout the performance. Although also a repertoire concert artist, the former student of Jean-François Zygel is a regular at the exercise and he reinterprets Harry O. Hoyt’s film nearly a decade after discovering and appreciating it. “It’s a very interesting feature film, it’s a forerunner of 1950s adventure films, Jurassic Park, King Kong… And it’s still well paced for our current vision even if it has some inglorious images. which testifies to the vision of the time of the class relationship and of women”.
The session in the Raymond-VI garden therefore promises to bring the generations closer together. As a nod to the story of the film adapted from Conan Doyle’s novel, Professor Challenger discovers a valley of dinosaurs and ape-men. “The improvisation during the film makes the show come alive, it connects young and old thanks to the link with the cinema. It is a happy experience. »
“A fantastic world”
And also an excellent opportunity to combine the two passions of Jean-Baptiste Doulcet, who was a film critic in the past. “I am very happy to return to Toulouse, I sincerely love this city. Moreover, it reminds me of one of my oldest cinema memories: as a child, I had seen a (bad) Clint Eastwood film at Gaumont on Place Wilson! »
The rendezvous on the banks of the Garonne is not to be missed for families, film buffs and lovers of the piano and cardboard dinosaurs. The opportunity also to discover the musical universe of Jean-Baptiste Doulcet, just before the release of his solo piano disc given to fantastic literature: “A fantastic world”. To be released on September 9 under the Mirare label.
