Visit Toulouse in 2022: the essentials
Pre-historically speaking, we find traces of occupation of the territory of Toulouse dating back to the era of lower paleolithic. We know that subsequently the pink city was founded by some of the Celts who migrated from Austria to Western Europe. By settling there, the Volques Tectosages gave it the name of Tolosa. Subsequently, the city was taken over by the Romans. The medieval period was known for the kingdom of the Visigoths of which it was the capital, the creation of the county of Toulouse and that of the Capitolat as well as the end of the counts in the 13th century. She was then attached to France and will house the country’s second parliament. It also became a very prosperous market town. Unfortunately, in 1463, a gigantic fire will mark its history and force it to rebuild itself in bricks.
The 16th century will be marked by wars, including that of religions. Following this conflict, Toulouse remained ultra-Catholic, for quite a while. It will also have a beautiful cultural and artistic influence in the 18th century, which will however be limited during the Napoleonic era. It will not experience a real industrial revolution. However, in the 19th century, the pink city was very modern thanks, among other things, to its architecture made up of large squares, suburbs and beautiful residences. Large urban plans sketched out the century before, and which persisted in proclaiming themselves in the 20th century, further transformed the pioneering city in terms of aviation. Among its most famous pilots, I cannot mention Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.
Today this metropolis festive, which is the heart of the Occitanie region, is highly industrialized, has many cultural sites and is very popular with the students who are welcomed there by the thousands.
