They have resumed service since June 3, 2022. They are the volunteers of the “Dragons bring you back“, the association created in 2003 by Quebec hockey player Guy Fournier. The former player and manager of Rouen Hockey Elite had the idea of importing the citizen concept of “red noses” from Canada.
The concept is simple: when you don’t deserve to get back behind the wheel, or aren’t in a condition to do so, you can call the association, which charges two volunteer drivers to take your car home with you. One drives your car, the second the association car. The citizen “taxi” is free, but donations are welcome because they are the ones who mainly support the association, in addition to partners such as Matmut or RHE sponsors.
The association had stopped its activity for two years, due to health constraints linked to Covid.
But the volunteers have taken over the wheel, and will accomplish their mission. every weekend, Friday evening and Saturday evening, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
This summer, the requests are already strong, the dragons will even be on a war footing on Wednesday 13 July, exceptionally, the day before the public holiday.
The association now has around 100 volunteers.but we are always looking for more so that the relays are done correctly“says Raphaël Roubert, volunteer for 17 years in the association.
“We need 10 to 12 volunteers on weekends as a general rule, but it can go up to thirty, like last weekend, when we have events: weddings, works council parties , etc…”
The association accompanies drivers and their cars up to 20 kilometers around Rouen. “We can go further, but we have to warn us in advance”, explains Raphaël Roubert.
The Dragons bring back around 1,800 cars with their passengers each year. The association experiences a peak every year, during New Year’s Eve, the evening when the champagne flows freely.
“What we want is that no one takes any risks on the road” , recalls the volunteer driver, who also does road safety in schools in the region. “The purpose of the association is obviously to save lives.
