Room: after green label from Brussels, also invest money in nuclear energy
The House of Representatives wants the cabinet to make money available for nuclear energy. The European Commission have nuclear energy and as green energy. Now the cabinet must make ‘the resources available, whether or not from the corona recovery fund’, according to a motive of JA21 MP Derk Jan Eppink.
The move is more or less in line with the cabinet decision on nuclear energy. The coalition agreement already stated that the VVD, D66, CDA and ChristenUnie wanted to encourage companies to win. Also, being ‘reviewed’ by the government would have made a financial contribution. The House is now calling on the cabinet to do so. Finance Minister Sigrid Kaag said that was the intention anyway, and therefore regarded the motives as ‘support policy’.
On Wednesday it became clear that Brussels gives nuclear energy a green label in the classification system that serves as a guide for investors. Gas also received such a label. The European Commission considered this justified because these power stations are less environmentally polluting than coal-fired power stations, which must be able to be taken out of use more quickly. Nuclear power stations and more and more stable sources, but without emitting CO2.
