GC “Melkom” bought the complex “Russian Len” — Agroinvestor
Melkom Group of Companies, which is part of the Russian Funds investment group, has acquired the Smolensk flax processing complex Russian Len. About it “Agro-investor” reported in the press service of the company. The complex includes a flax fiber processing shop, an export cottonization shop and 8,000 hectares of agricultural land.
Valery Misharin, Executive Director of Russian Flax, said:Agro-investor”, that the investor sees a growth prospect for the Russian flax industry, as well as a synergistic effect in the merger of income and acquired assets for growing and processing crops in the Smolensk region.
He drew attention to the fact that the production is natural fibers, which are an alternative to cotton in textile fabrics. “The production of the enterprise is in demand not only in Russia, but also in the countries of Southeast Asia, Russian Len is one of the largest producers and exporters of flax fiber in the country,” Misharin added.
In the Smolensk region, Melkom is an enterprise for the storage and export of grain and oilseeds. A growth company that has gained power by increasing the share of the population in the agro-industrial sector.
In 2020, “Russian Len” is the first flax mill in Russia in the last 30 years, it became a consequence in the country for the evaluation of flax. According to the combination of factors of increased capacity and production capacity, it appears in the top five producers of cottonized flax fiber in Europe, the company said.
The capacities of the enterprises make it possible to process 11 thousand tons of flax per year and produce 1.1 thousand tons of long fiber, 2.6 thousand tons of cottonine, and 2.5 thousand tons of fuel briquettes. Today, Russian Len products are suitable for export to the countries of Southeast Asia and Europe, as well as for export enterprises in Russia.
The initiator and investor of the Russian Len project on the territory of the Safonovo industrial park in 2018 was the ex-owner of the Belgorod agricultural holding “Promagro» Konstantin Kluka. In 2021, assets “Promagro” bought the Sibagro company, after the sale of Russian Flax, the entrepreneur finally left agribusiness, deciding to focus on investment projects in other places.
In January, Misharin said that flax is becoming more in demand due to the growth in cotton consumption, as it is the fastest consumption of the world’s most widely consumed natural fibers. “The growth of the world’s population, as well as the desire of people for environmental friendliness and naturalness everywhere, make the textile market the most marginal for flax growers,” he notes.
