It took a few weeks before the release of iOS 16 for Apple to update its Maps application in France. Apple’s navigation system finally incorporates the new features discovered in June 2021 during WWDC announcing iOS 15.
A Reimagined Experience
For its application, Apple explains that it started from scratch. So, if the landmarks that you retained on the old model of map remain the same, the plans really look new. It starts with readability since now, Apple Maps offers much more relief on the areas thanks to 3D. It is therefore easier to find one’s way than with the lines used to indicate the streets. Around the main monuments of France and Monaco, very precise 3D views are also integrated, allowing tourists to better orient themselves. Everything looks like a typical little video game City Sim. An observation that we already made at the time during the presentation of iOS 15.
Augmented reality is also invited to the party. Apple indicates that in the cities of Lyon, Marseille, Nice and Paris, pedestrian guidance can be done using AR. An option that has already been available from the competition for several years. It remains to be seen whether the adoption rate will be equivalent.
But it’s not just the exterior that’s getting a makeover. From now on, shopping centers and airports are entitled to precise 3D mapping. Perfect for being guided through the aisles of shops or for finding your boarding gate more easily. Speaking of which, thanks to Siri, your flight information will be used to proactively tell you where to go once your iPhone detects you’ve set foot in an airport.
Additional road directions
Widely used in cars, the smartphone has gradually replaced the good old GPS. Apple has understood this, but it remains difficult to find a place against Waze. With the new version of Maps, the display of directions gains in precision, just like that of the signs, which become more visible. But the great novelty was the appearance of speed limits, which did not exist on the application until then. Voice guidance is also more precise in its indications, to avoid route errors. Finally, it is now possible to notify other users of accidents on the road.
With this update, Apple is making up for the delay separating Plans from Google Maps. But Google’s solution is still a little ahead of us, in particular thanks to the consideration of alternative means of transport such as the bicycle. If, in the United States, iOS 16 comes to solve the problem, the deployment will only be done in the Anglo-Saxon countries at first. And we will have to wait almost a year before seeing these additions land in our regions…
