The reasons for the strike
The representative unions of the SNCF called the strike to demand wage increases for all the staff of the railway company in order to cope with the surge in inflation observed in recent months. In a press release, the intersyndicale explains that “ since 2014, the point value of the salary grid has been frozen and that as a result, “there is no longer any sharing of productivity gains”, while the costs of energy and foodstuffs increase. In addition, the unions point out that the SNCF continues to make profits. “In 2021, SNCF’s net income was 862 million euros! That’s the equivalent of 23,000 mid-paying jobs, or a 15% wage increase,” she continues.
