Biden lacks the votes for a turnaround
Washington – Thurs Biden did not have time to enjoy the European successes of the G7 in Germany and the summit Born in Spain, where he reaffirmed the role of the United States in the confrontation between the West, Russia and China, which on its return to Washington immediately had to deal with the complicated domestic political agenda.
To hold the bench is still there Supreme Court decision on abortion, which is turning out to be perhaps the thorniest issue of his presidency for Biden. Biden comes critic from the progressive wing of his partywhich accuses him more or less openly of not having reacted with sufficient energy to the decision of the Court, which he has in fact redesigned map of the United Statesnow divided between anti-abortion states and states where termination of pregnancy is legal.
For restore women’s right of choice throughout the country, Biden repeats, there is a need forapproval of a congressional law. Mom now, for the Democrats, the numbers are not enough. The Senate needs at least 60 votes, out of the 100 seats that make up the Assembly. In the current Congress, to the president’s party missing 10 votes. Or, to get around this obstacle, we need the current rules on obstructionism, which do not allow certain laws to be passed by simple majority.
The president, who had always been cautious on this point, has now given his opinion political consensus. But also for the so-called rule of ‘filibuster’, the Democrats are currently two votes. Here then is that the November elections will become the real watershed for the White House, with a president who, however, appears unmercifully weak in the polls. All this, after another decision by the Supreme Court, which this week rejected Biden’s law on the subject of environmental protection and the fight against climate changedismantling another cornerstone of his Presidency.
