Atomflot and Nornickel may extend long-term agreement on Arctic icebreaking support for two years after 2027

FSUE Atomflot and MMC Norilsk Nickel can extend a long-term agreement to support icebreaking for the company’s Arctic project for two years after 2027, said Konstantin Knyazevsky, FSUE Atomflot’s Deputy Director of Fleet Construction – Head of Atomflot’s St. Petersburg office. “We are currently advising Norilsk Nickel on extending the contract,” he said.
The design capacity of the Norilsk Nickel project is 1.3 million tonnes of non-ferrous and precious metals per year. Other long-term contracts with Atomflot include: Yamal LNG – delivery of tankers until 2040 (with option for another 10 years, capacity 17.4 million tonnes from 2022), Gazprom Neft – supply of 8.5 million tonnes of oil from Novoportovsk field until 2025 (option For an additional 4 years).
In January 2022, Helsinki Shipyard Oy announced the construction of the Arc7 icebreaker MMC Norilsk Nickel.
Construction, which began in 2022, is scheduled to be completed by the winter of 2025. The new icebreaker will be equipped with an integrated dual-fuel diesel power plant capable of running on both LNG and low-sulfur diesel. The ship is marked Icebreaker8 Russian Maritime Register (RMRS). It can break 2 meters of ice. The vessel’s future area of operation will be the Jenisey River catchment area, Jenisey Bay and the Karan Sea to ensure access to the port of Dudinka. The icebreaker, which will be relocated to Murmansk, will be tasked with making a route for the Arctic Expresses of the Nornickel Navy along the Jenisey River and towing additional Arc5-class vessels with a carrying capacity of up to 20,000 tonnes.
Sergey Dubovitsky, Executive Vice President of Nornikkel, told IAA PortNews at SPIEF about the restrictions faced by MMC Norilsk Nickel. According to him, the company will be able to assess their impact on the project by September 2022.
