Mercadona opens a new supermarket. It is the southernmost store in Portugal and has places for charging EVs – Executive Digest
Mercadona opens today the first supermarket in the city of Setúbal, arriving in a new district, the most southerly where the brand is located in Portugal. This store created 65 new jobs, with an open-ended contract from day one.
The inauguration of the new supermarket was attended by André Martins, Mayor of Setúbal, and Nuno Costa, President of the Parish Council of S. Sebastião
The new store is located at 1 Avenida Mestre Lima de Freitas and has a sales area of 1.90 square meters, with parking, 150 spaces and will also have 2 reserve spaces for charging electric vehicles.
Mercadona is committed to renewables, namely through the installation of solar panels in supermarkets. It is the one of this store, in Setúbal, where there are around 430 solar panels with a capacity to produce 200kW. By generating renewable energy of photovoltaic origin on the roofs of the stores, for self-consumption, the company saves approximately 20% of electricity annually.
“Our “Bosses” (Customers) have shown us the desire to have a store further south, which is why we are delighted to open the first Mercadona in the historic city of Setúbal. The company reinforces its expansion in the largest, generating employment, the supplier of social providers, a country of the district and applying its policies of Responsibility Ana Carreto of External Relations Center-South of Portugal Consumers.
In turn, André Martins, Mayor of Setúbal, emphasizes that “the installation of Mercadona Setúbal is unequivocally a result of the dynamism of this group, in addition to being a matter of the economic capacity of our city and our municipality… in the face of an equivocal sign of confidence in the municipality’s ability to manage this territory and generate new opportunities and investors”.
Mercadona has already invested more than 500 million euros in Portugal and created more than 2,500 new jobs in the country. By the end of the year, Mercadona will open another six new stores, closing 2022 with a total of 39 supermarkets in Portuguese territory.
